Air Travel During Pregnancy: Your Rights and Limitations

Embarking on a journey requires preparation, more so when you're pregnant. In this post, we'll demystify airline regulations regarding air travel during pregnancy and provide you with the knowledge you need for a safe and comfortable journey.

Each airline has its own policies concerning travelling while pregnant. Normally, women can travel up to the 36th week of pregnancy for single pregnancies and the 32nd week for multiple pregnancies like twins or triplets. It's crucial to consult with your healthcare provider and the airline's customer support prior to booking.

Despite varying policies, airlines cannot refuse to transport a pregnant passenger unless it's necessary to comply with safety regulations or the passenger cannot complete the flight safely unless they're accompanied. As a rule, a medical certificate dated within 10 days of the initial flight is usually required for pregnant passengers reaching the 28th week of pregnancy.

The airline must offer special services for pregnant passengers for added comfort, such as pre-boarding or additional legroom. If you're pregnant, inform the airline of your condition when booking to take advantage of these services.

Once onboard, standing up to stretch, moving your legs, and doing seated exercises can help alleviate discomfort. Deep vein thrombosis (DVT), a potentially life-threatening situation can develop during long flights. Pregnant women are at an increased chance of DVT hence it's advisable to wear compression stockings and drink plenty of water.

It is also essential to always wear your seatbelt low and tight across your hips. This ensures your safety during turbulence and prevents any unnecessary pressure on your stomach.

Your comfort and safety during the journey should always be paramount. If any airline employee infringes on your rights or causes discomfort, it's important to assertively voice your concerns.

Remember that planning is key for smooth travel. Be proactive, know your rights, plan ahead, and may your journey, like your future, be filled with joy and excitement.
